My Way...
began in the International School of Violinmaking in Cremona (Istituto Professionale Internazionale Artigianato Liutario e del Legno; I.P.I.A.L.L.). Under Cremonese masters such as Maurizio Tadioli, Giorgio Cè and Massimo Negroni I studied the principles of violinmaking, restoration with Claudio Amighetti and ‘set up’ with Toshiyuki Matsushita. I joined an advanced course with Pascal Hornung and Alessandro Voltini, and had my first bowmaking experience under the tutelage of Emilio Slaviero.

In 1999 I received my diploma in Cremona, as well as passing my journeyman's examination in Mittenwald, Germany, in the same year. For some time violas have held a special interest for me, and I have made copies of G.P. Maggini in Arwed Harms’ workshop in Cremona, as well as making copies of Gasparo da Saló with Bruno Dreux in Orléans, France. In 2000 I went to Lisbon, Portugal, where I began working with Christian Bayon, and it was in this city that I began my own workshop in 2002. I have joined serveral international events such as:

  • “Stage de Lutherie”, Normandy, 2007

  • Rencontre Active de Luthiers, Valaire, 2008

  • Encuentro De Luthiers y Musicos En Málaga, 2008

  • As well as attending conferences in Cremona (Mondomusica) and Paris (Musicora)

My Work ...
When a customer asks me to make an instrument for them, I strive to fulfill their requirements by applying the principles of care and dedication to my craft, whether the instrument be violin, viola or cello.

Over some time now my thinking has been going towards a closer understanding of the work of the Italian masters: rather than making perfect copies of their instruments, I seek to emulate their work within the broader context of the origins and developements of instrumental form. In this respect Bruno Dreux has been both a mentor and an inspiration to me, awakening in me a keen sensibility in both the spiritual and practical sides of violinmaking.

The violas of Gasparo da Saló occupy a special place in my heart. I fell in love with their powerful character and intense tone. Whilst being big, a shortened neck and mensur make playing confortable.
